One of these bolts doesn't look like the others.... You just never know what you're going to find when you work on someone else's car. Well yesterday we found this lag screw holding a water pump on a big block Olds. The good news is that it was bedded in with plenty of silicone and was installed by the owner's "professional" mechanic with 35 years of experience. LMAO!!!

The car was down on power so we had to inspect the timing gear set and sure enough, the cam was out of phase because the timing marks on an Olds are NOT the same as on a Chevrolet. The good news is the car is now performing as it should - the bad news is that the car no longer has the lopey cam sound now the cam has been properly phased.

And no Zack, Jeff did not help me write this post. I did it all by myself. :D

I always find it funny that people love the sound of a lopey idle yet a lopey idle does not necessarily mean it makes more power.
Many times the even sounding engine will make more peak HP.

Also, I work on fleet vehicles and see some of the "35 years of experience" stuff myself, left over from the old mechanics that used to work there.
For some reason silicone must have been like magic or something because they seem to like to put it on everything LMAO.

If it didn't leak then the mechanic thought his 35 years of experience told him it would hold long enough to get it out of warranty. Same reason I find cars the dealerships worked on where they just leave out the hard to re-install bolts. Helps you beat the flat rate book every time.

I have seen this several times myself, I really wish the Ford dealerships still had SVT specific dealers and mechanics. I never had an issue back then.

Coarse threads make more power. True story. It's like 1HP per bolt. The silicone is there to keep all the power manageable.
