Well im soon to be getting my marauder ready for winter. I will be running police wheels with merq mountaineer centers. I came up with the idea to have a custom badge made up for my winter set up that would say "POLICE DECEPTOR" i contacted a badge company for a quote and i recieved this in reply:

" Dear Bob:

Thank you for contacting the ______ _______ Quote Department!

The lead designer and I had to consult with our legal department regarding your design.* Unfortunately, we are unable to produce your design, because it says "Police".* We are prohibited by law from producing any badge that could be misinterpreted as being for a law enforcement vehicle.* If you replace "Police" with an alternate word, we can assist you with your design."

Anyone ever heard of this before? Any of the CVPI guys had issue because of their badge?

From the title of this thread I assumed you were talking about the owners of mm.net ;)

go to a graphic shop and have them makem a decal up in any font you want and then in spring peel it off. we dont need no stinkin badges..prolly could do it online too at a graphics/decal place

yes that is true, and if you go to a local graphics place and have them create it you may be asking for issues with your local police - not worth it to me. I don't know if it is a federal law or a state law but I know there are issues with even making a car look like a cop car even without the word "Police" on it

So i can order a badge from ford thou? I can ride around in a car with a push bar and spot light but i cant put a badge on my car. The police in my city dont care about much outside of their cell phones. Im certainly no looking for trouble or to impersonate an officer but i do like the undercover look.

It's most likely a liabilty thing especially if this company is local to you. This company makes you that badge. You go out and do something stupid with the badge on your car, and the PD comes knocking on their door when they ask you where you got that badge.

You may know you won't do anything dumb, but most places won't take the chance.

Ebay used to sell badges that said Pursuit Interceptor that looked nearly identical to a factory P71 badge, but thats kinda cheesy IMO.

Dude, don't do this. Even me, the village idiot says this is a bad idea. I share your sense of humor, but most of society will not and you will get in big trouble because of it.

So, if I bought an old Interceptor at an auction the badge would have been removed?

It really depends on the department selling it or specific state laws regarding it. I have seen many come thru auctions with the badge still there, and plenty of others come thru with the badge torn off.

Good point. Police Interceptor badge on millions of ex cop cars trunk lids.

Still, I'd not attract the hassle.

The end result will most likely not justify the effort IMHO.

I say do it. Its your car, it's funny, and if your not pulling over cars, your not impersonating a cop...end of story. Legally i dont see a problem.

I guess they wont like my blue line either.

People have all kind of police package cars in my area. Maybe every undercover should be accused of impersonating a civilian. Maybe thats a new idea "CIVILIAN INTERCEPTOR". I support the police and what they do but i do not support items like this regarding issues of vehicle codes. I think they over step their bounds.

Can't use "Pig" either because everybody knows that means police. How about COPS?

The only way i was gonna do it was for POLICE DECEPTOR. Like whitey said, it was just supposed to be funny. Im sure someone will get their panties in a bunch. Look i realize police put their lives on the line everyday, this isnt about that at all. Its just car guy stuff.

This has been beat to death on the Vic forums, and it usually ends the same way.

The company is either ignorant, or their "legal department" wound their britches up too tight. Nothing about having the word "police" on a sticker (which is all it amounts to), is illegal in any way. Ever see the "fraternal order of police" stickers they send out to donors that get stuck on cars? Has "police" on it. Hell, there was a band called "Police" don't think they ever got anyone thrown in the hokey pokey. Now, stick "police" on the side and go chasing people around, there's a problem. 99% of cops won't even notice, and if any give you a problem about it, 1) it's not illegal, and 2)they need to relearn their job description.

If it's something you want to do, then find another company and get it done.

At one point early on I had a "Police Interceptor" badge on The Blackbird...then I grew up and removed it and put it on my lawnmower.

When I was trying to buy it, I had one dealer tell me it was illegal and they would not order it for me. Went to another dealer and they ordered it without even blinking.

As others said above, thousands (millions?) of ex-police cars are running around with the badge left on...look at almost any taxi...and no one cares, but I do have to side with the posters who say don't do it.

Risk vs. reward.
One traffic stop by an officer that the topic is brought up will have you forgetting it was ever funny, to anyone but you.
I doubt they would feel intentional DECEPTION is funny in any way. Sad, but true.

Thats just it, it doesnt have to be funny to anyone else, just you. I had a police interceptor badge on my car for 4 years before i took it off. Never once was i asked about it in the 5-6 times getting pulled over for speeding, and never once got a speeding ticket either. If a cop doesn't find it funny, oh well...not your problem. I think its clever and might you might make an officer chuckle. If you get one made, ill buy one!(as long as its not ridiculously expensive).

You'd have to be using it to pose as the Police for it to be a problem, which you sure can't do with some center caps or a trunk badge anyway.
The only thing I can think of that would get you in trouble for this (short of a whole fake marked car with decals and all, which I've never even heard of anybody doing) would be mounting red & blue Police lights in your visors or grille (obviously).

I was waiting on a quote when told me they couldn't make it. Depending on cost i was going to buy several and sell a few. I havent looked into the other company yet for a quote but ill let you know.

I've seen cars with the black and yellow IL sheriff plate frames that read, "Illinois State Police" on them, no big deal. They can be bought online for like $10 and was thinking about buying one for my MM.

If anything, I'm sure some chinese vendor can make you whatever you want and ship it out.

State trooper followed me on the highway for 5 miles doing nothing wrong, then pulled me over. In my white P-71 and the state cars are silver. He said I did not signal at the stop light. (Right turn only in a right lane and light - did I need to signal?) Interrogates me on the car :"why this car? are you trying to impersonate...?" Then he sees an amber light on my passenger visor, power cord unplugged and wrapped to the visor, and freaks out! Pull that off now!!! I explained that was in the car when I bought it (true), the guy claimed to be some oversize load escort car.
Moral = go ahead, give yourself a reason to stand out. They sometimes enjoy it.

There are PLENTY of j*rkoffs out there, no one is going to argue about that. They made the Polish Ice Company take the decals off their vans !

Bad idea. But some variation of "Deception" on a licence plate could be cool.
