The Forum software assumes that you read your own posts so they are marked "Read" from the start. That's why they won't appear in the "Unread" listing until someone else makes a new post in your thread.

I find it better to use the "Today's Posts" on the menu bar across the top of the page. It will show all the new stuff since your last visit including the ones you have posted or read. The "Unread" stuff will be in bold text.
