Hey all

Someone pulled out in front of me while I was driving my 04 Sierra CC Z71. Insurance has deemed them at fault but I hit them at approximate 45mph and they were basically not moving. As such, the tfirst hcl is totaled, plus the 194k miles did not help the value of the truck. So it is time to buy something else.

We want a Crew Cab, captains chairs up front, tow ability of 7000lbs, no more than 3 years old, and 4 wheel drive. Do not want to spend over 35k out the door. Been looking, and really are narrowing it down to a Sierra/Silverado with a 5.3, or a F150 with a ecoboost 3.5 or the 5.0.

What are your thoughts/suggestions? Yes this a Ford forum, but I figure I can still get some honest feedback on he two models.

Thanks!
Anthony

I have a 2013 F-150 Lariat Supercrew 4x4 with the Ecoboost motor and it is a beast. I really haven't had any issues with it, but if I had to do it all over again I would get the same truck with the 5.0 engine. In the real world they get the same fuel economy and the 5.0 has less issues than the 3.5 Ecoboost. The Ecoboost has drivability issues, timing chain stretch issues and several other issues. The Ecoboost is a good engine, but Ford doesn't have all the bugs out of it yet.

I had a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE Extended Cab 4x4 with the 5.3 engine for a short while and didn't like it. The GMC was problem free for the 22,000 miles I leased it, but it just didn't fit me well. Seats were uncomfortable, fuel mileage was similar to the Ford's and I hated the interior. The Ford has a much better interior, but it's probably not fair to compare a Lariat to an SLE. A more fair comparison would be XLT to SLE and the Ford still wins in my opinion.

F-150 for the win!

I`m reading more and more good things about the new Chevy 4.3 motor....The new 2014+ 4.3 V6 is right on par with the original 1999 5.3 V8 engine.... 285hp/305tq for the new 4.3 and 285hp/325tq for the 1999 5.3 V8

I ask a friend that just bought a 14 with the 4.3 and this is what he said.....

Its is a V6 now based off the LS series gen 3 small blocks With 285hp/305ftlbs torque. It has great power, great gas milage, and once you put it in tow/haul mode, it becomes a whole different animal. I just pulled a Wrangler on a car trailer with it, and it pulled like any V8 I am used to. I got 25.3 round trip yesterday all hwy. That is caluclating it from fill up, to fill up. The truck said 25.2. Today I got 19 towing after fill up. The truck said 18.9 So I am super impressed with this new V6. I love it and glad i bought it.

Chevy/GMC for the win.

I have a 2012 F-150 King Ranch 4x4 with the EcoBoost and no problems--haul up to 7K but admit it does drink the gas for that--If I was to do a lot of hauling I might consider the 5.0 instead-It has gotten 20+ if you obey the limits when hauling lesser wt loads --so....-more research would be needed--but love the truck and all its features--and so does all the family including the Boxer!!

I recently bought an 08 Silverado with the 5.3L. The motor wasn't too much more powerful than the 5.4 F-150s I was looking at. But man the interior is so much better than the F-150s of similar years. It has really been a great truck.

I have a 13' FX4 supercrew with the 5.0, average fuel economy is 16.5-170 combined, I have gotten 21-22 on the highway obeying the posted limit. I have also hauled a car trailer behind it and gotten 15-16 mpg's.

I have 2 older lariot supercrews, a 08 4x4, and an 05 4x2, I wouldn't have a different truck, when the new Bronco's hit the floor, I may trade then

I have a 2013 Lariat Supercrew with the Ecoboost and I love it. About 17k miles on it so far and zero issues. It's a wonderful truck, and with the 4WD + Blizzaks, I have no issues in the snow and ice. :)

The interior of the newer (2011+) F150 is one of those things that caught my attention. I think it is nicer than than Sierra's. I have never asked for more power in my current 04 Sierra.

In 193K miles, I have put less than 2K into repairs - though I am anal about fluid changes and at the 100K service, only OEM parts were used. It still does not leak and only at the last oil change was it 1/4 of 1 qt low after 5K miles on dino oil. We have driven MOAB trails, traversed rivers (cost me a knock sensor), been on trails that were to small for the truck ... but it has never let us down and never not started. That reliability is what I am looking for.

So the big question is (and it seems you are all answering in the affirmative), will it be as reliable?

Both are good trucks. I just think the styling on the Cheby is hideous at best.

I'll keep my '04 Lariat supercrew till it's time to replace it with the same but newer. 6th F series I've owned, all after the two Chebys I wanted to throw matches at...

Go with the F150 EcoBoost, I own 1 2004 Lariat and drives great. Excellent power and acceleration. Installed Afe CAI and considering exhaust options for very near install. Did not purchase for fuel economy though it is decent. I drove it to Florida a few months back and I got 20mpg at 80 - 85 mph with some runs of 90mph

I picked up my new to me, 2011 Ford F150 Ecoboost Crew Cab FX4 last night. It is a dark grey, with full black leather interior. Only 35K miles and it qualified as a Certified Used car from the Ford dealership.

Just curious why are you not considering the Dodge, Toyota and Nissan trucks?

I like the look of the Ford over the Chevy and if I were to get the Ford I'd go with the 5.0. I dislike the buzz of the Eco.

Extended warranty till 2020 or 125k miles with $100 deductible.

Toyota ... Reliable but have never liked them. A GF (fiancé at one point) absolutely swore by them and would not consider anything else ... Ever. When we parted, I think I permenetly gave up on them as well.

Nissan Titan is ugly. My honest opinion and yours may vary.

Dodge. Looked at them but as I dove them, was not impressed. Plus mpg on the dodge is horrible, and I do drive my truck. It sees 20k a year plus, a lot of highway and i could not handle the mpg of the Dodge.

I am in need of help with the word game. I only know the old school word game which is xxx rated

I have the 2014 F150 Lariat 3.5L Twin Turbo and I added the AFE Cold Air Intake, SCT SF4 and got some tunes for 93 octane. I am going to have Martyo do some tunes for me (a trusted source)
I do not want to change the suspension but some new wheels and tires are in the works as well as down pipes, intercooler and exhaust. The exhaust is what I really need to research FlowMaster has one and so does Stainless works. I also have on the radar an exhaust system from MPT (More Power Tuning) All of them have 3 inch systems

Not sure if lariat/xlt or what.

It has tow package, leather, heated seats, sync, back up cameras, fx4 which includes beefier suspension and skid plates, remote start, keyless entry ....

No subwoofer or moonroof.

I missed in your earlier post ...FX4
Good Truck, Good thing that there is no 700 watt Sony sub, it's sounds terrible. The first thing I did was to rip that thing out and went with a Kenwood 600 watt with a custom 10 inch sub, an interface to my touch screen and changed the speakers in the doors
