I have to drive from Cincinnati to Chicago and back. My brother in law bought a new 2014 VW Wagon Diesel with a 6 speed manual. I am doing the Top Gear challenge of attempting the trip in 1 tank. He told me he loves the car, but it looks dull, so we plasti dipped the wheels and I think it looks a lot better. He let me borrow the car and he get's the Marauder for a few days.
The trip is 604 miles and the range is 595 miles. Place your bets!
Why the drive back and forth? Because band practice doesn't take a holiday.

Not everyone has it easy as you with 80 gallon dual tanks. ;)

Just do everyone a favor and drive in the right lane so that you can get over to the break down lane without creating a highway risk to others.

No dual tanks that a tractor trailer set up (1- 250 gal each side)
Most coach's have 1- 200 gallon tank:)

You can try kerosene in this one. Just might go the distance with a little K1 in it.

I'm very familiar with these cars. It won't make it. The most we got out of ours topped off to the max was 578. It'll get 42 to 43 max MPG's.

Drove mine to Nashville TN from London Ontario. I puppied it for one tank and squeezed 700 km to one tank. Thought that was ok. Not amazing but good.
I did a trip to Memphis TN and back on 3 tanks and got 825 km to a tank in my 9C1
That at 130-140 km hr the entire trip. Now that was awesome

I made it back to Chicago on 1 tank, using the loser lane.
Leaving for Ohio on the same fuel new years eve.

Friend of mine has one of those for his DD. He said it will get close to 600 miles on a tank but he's never been brave enough to see how close.
Good luck

This is the amount of fuel I had left when I got back to Chicago. Getting back to Ohio will be easy.... so I decided I will drive to Rockford, IL to look at a piece of music gear. This will add 180 miles to the trip. I have added a 1 gallon gas can in case I actually run out of fuel.
Stay tuned.

I would not recommend running out of fuel. it could potentially damage your rather expensive High Pressure Fuel pump. On a new TDI (2009+) I would recommend priming (filling) the fuel system before trying to start the engine if you do run out of fuel. To do this requires VCDS (Vag-Com) or the dealer's scan tool.
Best advice: Do not allow your TDI to run out of fuel - period. It's better for your car and it's better for your own piece of mind. When you start to get low on fuel - buy some more. It is really that simple. There is no good reason to ever run out of fuel. Pay attention to your fuel gauge and pay attention to your warning lights. Then you should never run out of fuel
This is from a VW forum.

The car will be fine. I am now trying to reach a 50mpg average.
Hopefully you guys can learn to read things more carefully and stay updated

What's with these guys? No advice needed or wanted! You just need to look at sb350's automotive stable to understand this. Oh whoever let this idiot borrow his car should have said "treat it like it's mine" not "treat it like it's yours".

I made it.
BTW I never drive another persons car like I drive my own.
Will calculate MPG tomorrow. Hoping I made 50, but it's probably 46.
Ohio to Chicago and back to Ohio on 1 tank!

Wow I was right on the money. 46MPG and within 22 cents of what I predicted the trip would cost me. $35.78 in diesel round trip.
Now it's back to the loud box.
