How good is the 4R75W transmission?

I am learning about transmissions to see what I need to do to support about 600 RWHP. This well-known article (http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/transmission/page1.shtml (http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/transmission/page1.shtml)) provides some recommendations to beef up a 4R70W. I understand there are several versions of a 4R70W. In general, the newer versions are better. The strongest version is used on 5.4L trucks. Oversimplifying the article, to build a strong 4R70W one would take certain parts from 5.4L transmissions and incorporate them into the Marauder transmission and would add a few more clutch plates. Or to paraphrase the author, one could start with a 5.4L transmission (and add clutch plates).

This led me to question the differences between the 4R70Ws found in our Marauders vs the ones found in the 5.4L trucks. I couldn’t reach a definite conclusion, but then I looked into the 4R75Ws and it appears these are used in 5.4L trucks!! If this is correct, then the 4R75Ws are likely already very strong. The question is how strong?

Last, how difficult or costly is it to add direct and forward clutch plates?

according to the Ford Transmission manual, The transmission designation was changed in 2004. Several improvements were made; front pump, turbine speed sensor, output shaft ring gear and planetary gear set. 4.6L engines got the 4R70E...... 5.4L engines got the 4R75E, the only difference being the planetary gear set is hardened on the 4R75E.

I am told the marauder got the hardened planetary, similar to the 5.4L trucks, but I am not able to find any documentation of this.

In stock form, the 4R70E can handle 500hp. Above that, adding clutches to the forward and direct clutch is recommended, which usually requires machining the clutch pistons.

You're right about the performance improvements of 4R75W over 4R70W.

I'm pretty sure the 4R75W was also used in the '04 Marauders. One of the few improvements (along with heated seats and traction control) added to the '04. Sort of makes up for losing the map pockets, dash clock, remote fuel door release, painted cam covers, underhood light, full-size spare, etc...

When hunting for a unit from other vehicles, keep in mind that the Marauder has the long output shaft and tail housing.

Good info. What would be a rough estimate to do this work? I have a second transmission (a 4R70W though) I may send to a local shop for an upgrade. However, I am a bit concerned the local shops aren't very experienced with the MM 4R70/75 versions. So I need to do more homework on this.
