Could be the timing chain tensioners. They bleed down after sitting for a while, then pump up once there is oil pressure. Nothing to worry about.

Have someone else start the car cold while you've got your ear in the engine bay to try and pin down where it's coming from. It could be tensioners, lash adjusters, etc. It may or may not be much to worry about. Obviously it goes away with oil pressure.

What kind of oil filter are you using? Many people report cold start-up noises that are cured by using the factory-recommended Motorcraft FL820S.

K&N oil filters are no longer made in America. K&N transferred production from Champion Laboratories when Champ was purchased by FRAM and they are now made in Korea. According to Jay Buckley at FRAM, quality has fallen off as well.

While it's still a decent filter, it's way over-priced. The Motorcraft FL820S is a much better value for money, as is the FRAM Ultra.

Could likely be tensioners. My engine sounded like it had gravel in the timing chain cover until I put new units in. Now its quiet and smooth as buttah.

Check for exhaust leaks, and for loose spark plugs.

Had same issue when I purchased my MM years ago went with Motor craft 820S as suggested on here then, quiet since. Good advice.

Have someone else start the car and listen underneath the car near the starter when the noise is happening.
