I was asked to build a transmission for a 2003 supercharged Marauder. Since the car was out of state, I chose a low mileage core from a 2004 Grandmarquis. Transmission was torn down and inspected, I found very limited wear. The case was cleaned and I started assembly. The first thing that needed to be changed was the output shaft, the Marauder uses a long output shaft.

Since the transmission was being installed in a 2003 model car, the correct output shaft ring gear needed to be installed. 2004 and newer output shaft ring gears have 24 extended lugs the output shaft speed sensor reads, opposed to the older style ring gear that has 6 holes. Making this change required the output shaft speed sensor be changed to correct part, the sensor for the new style ring gear is .100" shorter to clear the extended lugs. The new style OEM sensor is also white in color.

The new parts were assembled and new teflon rings are installed.

The direct drum oiling holes are enlarged for improved lubrication.

The intermediate stub shaft is upgraded to a shaft made from 300m alloy.

The mechanical diode one way clutch is upgraded to the newest factory part that has a thicker body and more locking teeth. This updated part is installed using an aftermarket spiral locking ring.

The pump stator oiling hole that feeds the mechanical diode one way clutch is enlarged to improve fluid flow to the mechanical diode.

The intermediate clutch frictions are replaced with a smooth clutch plate for more surface area when 2nd gear applies. This is the ideal friction for supercharged application, however it requires an aggressive 1-2 accumulator to prevent the clutch from hydroplaning when it applies, which would eventually cause the friction material to glaze.

The pump gears were scratced and worn. New gears were installed.

A new tail shaft bushing was installed.

Since the factory transmission pan was damaged, a new U-haul spec pan was installed with a Drain plug.

The valve body was rebuilt, new sonnax valves were installed, a superior tuff plate/separator plate was installed and the appropriate holes for the Jmod were drilled.

Aside from the upgrades I have detailed above, the entire transmission was completely rebuilt. ALL the parts were disassembled, cleaned inspected and new seals, gaskets, o-rings, clutches and bands were installed.

The finished product, ready to be installed.

good questions.. I used OEM style clutches from Raysbestos, which an OEM supplier.

This build got lt blue upper 1-2 spring and purple lower. I also installed a purple 2-3 accumulator spring from Sonnax.

The OD band was updated to the latest factory style band, which is the black, high carbon material. This band wears much better than the earlier style, tan paper and resists burning.

I use a 6" long carbide drill bit. the holes are enlarged .005" larger than stock.

There is a Kevlar OD band for race 4Rs also, not that you'll hit it in the 1320... Very nice info btw.
