View Full Version : My 1993 Lincoln Town Car Build from Start to (almost) Finish
A little over a year ago, I sold my Cobra as a roller. The car was not for me (because it was missing two doors and just plain difficult to work on.)
Shortly after I said goodbye to the Mustang, I went looking for a 90's Town Car. I had previously owned 2 of them and loved them.
Luckily, a Florida Town Car presented itself in the local Craigslist. After a weeks work of $$ negotiations, It came home.

Fast forward to October 2014, when I finally decided to mate the Cobra powerplant to the 93 Town Car.(Less TH400, Built 4R70W for this)
I knew I would be using a Marauder wiring harness to complete the job...I wasn't going to spend 900 bucks on a stand alone harness.
So I found a barrage of helpful items, all scored on ebay. I now had the tools to dive in.

I knew I would need headers, but no company made them for a 4V in this platform. So I had Stainless Works tack 4V flanges on the 2V Headers designed for this platform.....fit like a glove!

I knew I wouldn't be using the pcm controlled fan, so I scoured the interet looking for the solution. What an epic win....Use a BMW dual temp switch with a 94-97 T-Bird Fan, custom mounted to a 95 Bronco Radiator.
And to control it all, a Volvo 2 speed relay.

I bought the radiator and fan from the boneyard for mockup, I bought new stuff for the final build.
For fuel, I bought 2 AEM 320 pumps and modified the stock fuel pump assembly. I also used a Racetronix pass through bulkhead for the pumps so I had enough juice.

A -8 line goes to the front and the factory feed and return line are Tee'd together for the return path. I even switched the orientation of the stock fuel filter for double filtraton!
The 2nd pump is run off a Hobbs Switch so it doesn't run full time.
I knew I'd need a stout Rear Diff, so I elected Dutchman Motorsports to custom make me a set of 31 Spline axles. Along with those, I installed energy suspension control arm bushings, and had 3:73 gears and a Cobra Diff installed.

I refused to buy an aftermarket trans cooler, so I plucked 2 stacked plate coolers from late 90's Ford Explorers in the boneyard. $25 investment.

What a blast this has been. I'm hoping to be 100% done by spring. I will also need a set of 19" wheels and tires to clear the brakes. I will keep you updated as I wrap things up.

Love the work Zack. My dad is smiling down on this. He loved Lincolns. Kept one until he passed in 2011.
Love the brake choice as well. If only those calipers would work on your other brake mod. Looking forward to seeing the final project

Great job Zack as usual. Glad I could help a little on this one.
I always enjoy your builds, in some ways we are similar, yet other ways so different lol.
Like we end up in approximately the same place but we both end up taking different routes to get there. You never fail to impress with your ideas, innovations, methods, etc.
Those headers are sick too. Might have to get a pair of those.

Wiring seems like a freaking nightmare, also, what are your boost/fuel plans? leaving stock 3.5 pulley on and just going e85? Thought I seen a metco lower pulley setup which made me remember I've asked this question once with no luck on getting an answer, Zack can we use #6 lower on our cars?

Zack, get ya some of these to use in areas where you are using those relays. They look neater and like the rest of the wiring in your build and you can solder them rather than crimping them
If you would like I can send you some.

Oh, I so love a good lincoln project ;) Way cool !
So you're driving this with a Marauder PCM ? Does it have an output to drive the analog 90s tachometer (assuming the town car actually has one lol ) ?

No tach on the TC. My plan is simple.
2 real gauges, one for Oil Pressure and the other for Wideband.
Everything else will be displayed via a Nexus 7 Tablet running the Torque app.

WOW I knew what you were doing but your use of parts from every year make and model to come up with one solution is amazing. The hours spent researching are more impressive than the time it is taking you to put it all together. Love the car love the theme. Now quit posting and get back to work winter is almost over.
Sweet Lincoln project now on steroids. Was the wiring as difficult as it looks ?
Wiring a mod motor and a manual trans is easy. Auto not so much.
I pulled about 10-15 unnecessary pins out of the pcm.
There are only 3 wires that need 12v and the grounds hooked up to make a mod motor run.
Integrating all that stuff into the Town Car electrical system was certainly challenging, but made much easier with the use of the wiring diagrams I had purchased (thanks massacre)

I purposely bought a pre-obd2 car so I wouldn't have to deal with emissions.
The greatest part of the car being older is the use of my brain to get it all working. Any 03+ car is a bolt in, modify a few wires and you are done kind of project.

Zack, great job. Its off the charts on the cool factor.
Boy do I hate making exhaust. Stainless wire (.035) would not work in my wire feed welder (only takes .030) Tacking 409 with mild steel wire is not fun....the weld cracks when it cools. Figured out I need to heat the area surrounding before tacking to avoid cracking. I will finish weld with stainless rod.
Passenger side is done. Awaiting 4 more 45 degree bends to do the drivers side. I am running dumps for now. **** is expensive.

And somehow one of the 4 mounts got welded slightly off. I wasn't about to remove and have re-welded. I also was not worried about opening the ID because the braking force will always have the bolt against the solid part of the mount. In any case, I made a filler with stainless sheet and the gap is taken up nicely. I'll sleep easy now that this is done

I was hoping so, I haven't used mine and was ready to send them back. Great work. Can't wait to see it finished.
I'm still making good progress.
I Tig welded the passenger side on Thursday night. (first time using a tig)
By the time I had finished, I had progressed to the point of the welds looking really good.
This morning, I built the drivers side.
Lastly, I made the brackets and hanger for the passenger side.
The pipes are tucked up and out of view.
Lovin' it!

I am requesting dibs if you decide to sell this car!

Pretty sure it will be a roller at that point. Lol
Update: The exhaust is done from the headers to mufflers with dumps. The drone is insane so I will have to extend the pipes to the back... In a few weeks.
I finished the dashboard today, and it's pretty badass IMHO.
The AEM gauge is also a boost gauge and failsafe gauge. I chose to wire in a 12v alarm to go off if the AF goes above the programmed value. (I snagged it out of a retired oxygen concentrator at my job. LMFFAO.
I'm rebuilding the front suspension this week, and tires arrive tomorrow.
Here is the 12v alarm installed in the dash panel below the column:

And here is the dash. I installed turn signal LED's, High Beam indicator, OD cancel light, and the Check engine light is now in the factory Anti-Lock Brake position. (I deleted Anti-Lock Brakes, that **** is for ******s.)

Man you should get all your notes & pictures together and do a detailed layout and send the package to Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords, sure they are 95% all Mustangs but the other 5% goes to other nice & fast FoMoCo cars and trucks. Maybe even send it to Ford headquarters to see if someone there might be willing to take a look see(It happened here locally where a guy took his Silverado and turned it into a Caddy truck and GM brass came to see it). Have to think about it, I would say....even SEMA....LOL...:bows:

I wrapped up the entire front suspension last night.
Removing upper and lower control arm bushings on this car is quite the task.
I also installed new front coil springs. I'm keeping the entire car stock ride height because IDGAF. Using a spring compressor is just about the scariest job any mechanic can do....F that.
I also did a quick mock-up of the brakes and wheel.
Have you ever seen the front suspension of a 93 Lincoln so clean?

I boxed the control arms and installed a poly bushing kit.
And yes it's my 2 car garage (with a lift on one side. ) It's very cramped.

Yes, yes it is JBeezy. Its just a badass build. Period.
Well, I have good a bad news.
I grossly mis-judged how much boost the 2.9 would make.
The car made 25psi with 93 octane in the tank.
After we made a pull and saw 20psi, I threw 5 gallons of 109 in so it wouldn't blow up.
Assuming I would be using 93 after the dyno, timing was kept at 10 degrees for all pulls.
It drives good and pulls good, but I need to lower the boost down to 18 and add a meth kit, then go back and have it re-tuned.
I also discovered my brand new wideband is faulty. Instead of reading rich at wot, it pegs lean. Only I could get a bad gauge out of the box. (the sensor passed the rag test fyi)
Anyway, I'm going to park it for a few weeks while I collect parts and do some necessary house work...along with waiting for the gauge to be fixed.
My accessory drive belt will not stop chirping which is driving me crazy.
I swapped belts, checked pulley alignments and it all checks out.. WTF.
So here is a dandy dyno video for you, with it making 600/600 with 10 degrees of timing. LMAO.

1993 LTC curb weight is 3900-4100 according to the books.
I'll weigh it at some point when the opportunity presents itself.
My underhood lighting kit came in yesterday, so I'll get that put on next.

It's a 10 second car no doubt, but I lost the desire to 1/4 mile years ago after I broke the car 2 weeks in a row.
Going to the race track with a powerful car is never cheap.
And....I don't own a truck and trailer.

Hell the driveshaft alone was $600.
I spared no expense.

No track close to your house so a tow back home won't break the bank? You build a car like that and don't plan on racing it at least once?

I agree with Zack. There is a LOT riding on trust that the aftermarket parts will hold up to expectations. It has NOTHING to do with how we built them and the parts we fabricate as none of that has ever let us down..
Once you've been let down and are stranded, all the meanwhile thinking about the dollars now wasted plus knowing you built it as tough as you could with what is out there and now your hitting a brick wall because theres nothing better. Just a big damn headache. This is exactly the reason I bought a truck and trailer! I am so done trusting aftermarket crap. My car will never leave the state or be raced again without it and I'm not embarrassed to say that.
I hope to see my numbers by late this year but probably next year. Then I'm done with it just like Zack.

Anyone ever stop to think that part of the fun is building something that nobody else would build? Or just the BUILD itself? How about figuring out what parts can be used from other vehicles at a relatively low cost to achieve modification without breaking the bank? Volvo cooling fan relays, making a wiring harness instead of buying one, etc Cadillac Calipers, Ford Rotors, someone's brake hose, modifying spindles, hell......... its incredible. Lots of people here need to take note. THIS IS HOT RODDING. And its built not bought. If it doesnt make it to the drag strip its okay because you dont need a timeslip to prove you built a badass ride.

This is gospel and I could have not said it better.
When this car is presented to a crowd, it will undoubtedly get the most attention.
Why? Because chevelles and camaros are a dime a dozen.
Seeing a 4 door sled with gobs of unique mods and an abundance of horsepower catches the eye of a real enthusiast.

I love your question about my current 1/4 mile time! I can't wait to hit the track as soon as I get everything ready. If it breaks down, it breaks down. Have credit card, will travel. I HAVE to know what it will do after all the work I've done. Building a car so people can drool over it is great, but I personally have to know I can back up the package with some solid numbers in a car that can handle 1/4 mile runs without breaking down in the first 100 feet. Otherwise you just have a garage queen, in my ever so humble opinion.

I just did a clay bar and 3 step buffing on it last night.
It has just the right balance of sparkle and roughness to fit the Hot Rod look I was after.
My only future plans are to:
-Add 18x10 rims in back. (already have them)
-Replace all AC components and add the Killer Chiller (already have that too)
It's first show is this Saturday. Should be a smash hit.
