Function of the resonator on the exhaust???

What exactly is the function of the resonator on the exhaust pipe. The exhaust on my car is a single and the the engine size is 390 with a 2 valve carb.

According to this manual there should be one of these somewhere around the front seat under the car, but there isn't...

A resonator is just a muffler to reduce tail pipe noise.
