Need legal advice. A unique guitar stolen from me 13 years ago pops up at Guitar Center. I told my high school (where it was stolen from) but never told the police. How do I get it back.... legally?

Have old parts and photos of me playing it as a teenager.

What do I do?

You have to pay to get it back then file a civil suit to sue whoever sold it to them to get your money back.

It will be very hard without proof like a serial number. I would file a police report as soon as possible although they might laugh at the length of time.

i would say buy it at the store, then go from there. If you really care about it that much.

You will need proof that you owned it with proper documentation. More times then not, you are just boned.

I'd say the statute of limitations has run out. You should have reported it way back when. You are SOL.

Phone the police and tell them

(wait for it, wait , wait for it)

Tell them you have AN AXE TO GRIND, hahahhahah ;) OK some will get that sense of humor others won't.

Sorry your SOL, you will have to buy it back.

$499.

Someone else has it on layaway.

Lots of red tape.

Luckily, I know a worker at that store. He said he would be happy to get this in order.

We will see.

I would assume the statute of limitations, or periods of prescription for a civil case, has passed.

Buy it, enjoy it and let go of what you cannot control.

It wouldnt hurt to go to the police and ask for there help, then tell the owner/manager whats going on, show the pictures. If you are will to pay for it even, I cant see them letting you have it.

Just buy it back then and call it a lesson learned.....

Barring any shenanigans, I think the others are correct...you're too late to do anything legally. See if the store will relay your concerns to the person who has it on layaway...maybe they'll deal.

Whenever I need legal advice for one of my upcoming court cases the first thing I do is post on the car forums and FaceBook! :D

The guitar is not mine.

Headstock was painted from the factory, (NOT modified) mine was natural wood.

You have no recourse.

The guitar is not mine.

In law school they told us to establish the facts first.

That probably would have been a good lesson here.

I will be sending you a bill for the time spent.

The difference between contacting a lawyer directly and posting on facebook, is you will find guitar center workers on facebook who are used to this kinda thing.

I will send Waffle House meal your way and a lunch special from "Atlanta backpages."

Although I have never had any training in criminal investigative work I have been a fan of mystery novels for several decades. After so much reading often I am able to tell, from the leads and clues given by the author, who-dun-it sometimes surprisingly early in many novels. I predict that you will find your guitar and that it will be discovered that the thief is a music lover. Your high school music teacher stole that guitar.

Awwwww JEEZ!
All this Dom thread reading for naught.....glad to see that things never change.

File suit anyway and try to shake them down for some pre-trial settlement money!
After all.....it's the American way to hit the Lottery.

Actually, my high school music teacher is in jail for a double murder. The first one at least. The second kicked me out of class for playing too loud, yes like the simpsons intro. I was let back in, but after that guitar was banned from school and drum sticks could no longer be carried in hallways because I "used them as a weapon" on some teenage coke head who wouldn't leave me alone. He got in trouble, not me. Glad to be outta high school.

hurt me so badly,

no lawyers helped me
to get it back...
my high school teacher
was just sellin' crack!
turns out my guitar,
wasn't really mine...
I was just wastin'
everybody's f'ng time
