It's been a little complicated, as this will be my next company lease car. My current lease isn't up until June. So I had to find a dealer that would order the car in early March, commit to a price not to exceed what I wanted to pay (which means the dealer had to bet a bit on the rebates), and hold the car until late June. My local dealer (Minnesota) backed out on a deal we had after he decided that the cash rebates for owner loyality and AARP wouldn't apply as the "owner" would be the Gelco not me---and he didn't want to gamble on going into his "hold back money". Same story at another Minneapolis dealer. (I still wonder why Mercury is willing to give an old fart, and someone likely to make a repeat purchase anyway, more of a rebate then say someone that's 40 and driving a Buick!!!! But then most people on this board already understand that Mercury doesn't have a competent marketing department.)
Anyway I digress. Went to visit my son in Kenosha, Wisconsin in mid March (if you're hunting or fishing near Kenosha, follow the Wisconsin fish and game laws or you may have an unpleasant meeting with him). Stopped at a dealer in the area, told him what I needed to make a deal ($150 over invoice but not to exceed $30,000 with applicable rebates for a DTR over dark charcoal with moonroof, 6 CD player, and heated seats). He said sure (I had gone straight to the new car sales manager), give me a $100 deposit and we'll get it on order!! I was in and out in not more than a half hour.
A couple of days later, the Minneapolis dealer called to see if I had changed my mind as he needed to get his last order in also. I told him I had already put $100 down and had a deal. He called back in a few minutes to say he would do it the same but price protect at $29,900 so I could walk away from my $100 deposit. And then car dealers wonder why others think poorly of them. I told him a deal is a deal.
I was back in Kenosha this weekend and called the dealer there---he had it in already!!! Looks great (he's keeping it inside) and now I just have to wait another 6-7 weeks. I think I can handle it----had to wait 4 months for my '67 vette to come in after I ordered it 37 years ago!!!!
This fall I will be checking on winter tire packages but this summer will be a blast!!!
