Thought it would be cool to start a thread for members to tell their stories about their friends and families reaction to the acquisition of their MM. I'll start:
The first day I drove my MM to work, most of my co-workers congregated in the parking lot to see what the hell a "Mercury Marauder" was. I had spent 2 weeks trying to explain it, but they thought I was crazy because they had never heard of such a car. As they strolled out, many of them stood just staring.
Finally someone said something. "This is one of the *****ing coolest cars I've ever seen!"
I proceeded to give a few rides. I picked one of the office hotties to ride shotgun, and merged out onto the highway. She likes to play it cool as the other side of the pillow. But she quickly lost her sense of cool when I entered a mild bend in the highway at about 120, changed lanes, and headed for the off-ramp to head back to the office. She yelled "Oh my God!" and breathed out quite heavily. She was grabbing the seat and "oh *****" handle with white knuckles. As we slowly entered normal traffic in town, she looked at me and nervously laughed, breathing quite quickly.
I think she needed a cigarette. I made sure someone gave her one. :D

We have people hanging out their car windows when we take ours out, they usually think it's a Chebby with the 3 taillights and all, you can see the confused looks when they see the name, Marauder, on the front fenders.  :rasta: :D :D

My coworkers told me the day I drove to work in my new Marauder, that I looked like a drug dealer. I don't get along with them very well because they think i'm an over achiever that deliberately makes their lazy asses look damn lazy. However, a couple that I really get along with loved and and wanted to go for a ride. They told me that these were the best rims they've ever seen come from the factory.

I was heading to my car this evening, the sun was down but I was parked in the lot right underneath the light pole. As I crossed the lot I saw a guy who had just parked his Saab staring at it, looking it over. I unlocked the doors as I approached, turning the lights on. He turned around, sort of startled and said "oh, I was just admiring your car and trying to figure out what it is."
"It's a 2003 Mercury Marauder," I replied.
"Never heard of these before. Are those stock wheels?"
"Yup. 18 inch."
"Wow. Nice car."
I made sure to start it up while he was still within earshot. If he thought it was nice before, I bet he loaded his pants when heard it roar to life.

It's like a "well taken care of" Impalla SS. There are just so many running around town that are abused to hell and back.
The first time someone commented to me was the valet at a restaraunt we went to for our anniversary. When I pulled up in the rain, the valet paused and just gauked at it. He gave me my ticket and even though it was raining and the lot nearly empty, he parked it in the last spot fartherst away from the door. After dinner when I was about to hand my ticket to another guy, the same guy that parked my guy noticed me and said, "Black Marauder, I'll get it." And he ran through the rain to just drive it through the lot.
And yep, I made sure it didn't have any extra miles it.
I still get thumbs up from other drivers while driving and have discussions at stop lights. It happened 2 weeks ago when I was stuck in traffic and admiring a 1988 Monte Carlo that had been modified coming the other direction. When we noticed each other looking at the other's car, we gave each other the thumbs up almost simultaneosuly.

Oh my gawsh . . . I'm having heart palpitations. Did you say you let the valet take it AND it was raining? Those are two words my MM never wants to hear. Had the darlin' out today and then six raindrops fell in the Northeast. Took him home and tucked him in for the night, reassuring him that the sun will be out tomorrow (yeah, my Marauder is a he, not a she).
Getting back to the original question, when my brother-in-law first saw the Marauder, he asked me to pop the hood. His 6'3" large frame then jumped back as he muttered a monotone "whoa." Never saw him move quite that fast, even though it was only two feet.

Did you refer to a "he" as darlin'?
You know, the Marauder doesn't melt if it gets wet. They may cancel baseball games if it rains, but guys will play football in anything. A Marauder looks more like a middle linebacker than someone called a relief pitcher, don't you think?

You've got a point there. If I dig real deep into my subconscious, maybe it's because, as his legal guardian, once I get him all clean, shiny and handsome I want him to stay that way for awhile before it's time to do the all-afternoon wash, dry, Zaino routine (which I can't really do during the winter, anyway). I certainly didn't intend to make a sissy out of him or diminish his masculinity, gawd forbid. I could never live with myself. On the other hand, rainy days and parking lots give the he-man Caprice 9C1 a day out and a chance to earn his keep.
And, of course a darlin' can be a he. Ain't you never listened to country music?

The first day I drove my MM to work, I had to show it off .
I was at a stop light, when I noticed two guys in a early 80's caddy checking out the front rim that was next to their door.
I crept up to where our doors were even, rolled down the pass side window, and said "Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?"
They laughed, and then asked "Is that on of those new ah, ah ah..
I said "Mercury Marauder?"
(Them) YA! THATS IT!
(Me)Yes
(Them) SWEET!

My Aunt and Grandma still haven't realized that I bought a new car....I guess cause it kinda looks like my old 2002 CV Sport.

Lots of stories like the rest of the members. However, just after I got my '03MM, it was parked in the driveway. Several of my son's friends (all in late teens and early 20's) were standing around checking it out -- smiling and asking questions. "Man his dad has bigger wheels than us!!" in reference to their hotrods. My son asked if he could take 'em for a quick ride and I flipped him the keys and a "Just take it easy" mandatory word of caution. About 20 minutes later, they all climb out of the car and said "Wow". I didn't ask any questions; but my son drives exactly like me. He's the only other driver that I feel comfortable with or work the right seat pedals. Of course, I insist that always he bring it home with a full tank of gas. I think I am way ahead so far in the gas trade.

For quite a while after getting my MM, neighbors would run out to catch me on my way in to ask me what it was:D, and to get a better look at it.

My side of the family got to see the Black Bomber even before Gordon did. My family and I took a trip out west over the summer while our Marauder was still at Kenny Brown. David Frey was sure surprised when Mom, Dad, sister and niece piled out of the car to get the first looks at the car. Cameras snapping and movie cameras going! Wow, neat, cool were some words from my niece as my dad asked the mechanical questions. Then David gave my niece and I a quick ride. The Black Bomber moved steady, fast and with grace as it put my niece back in her seat. I thought she was going to wet her pants. Good thing she didn't, Uncle Gordon wouldn't be too happy about that. LOL.

Beautiful cool morning drive with the windows down into work the other day... pulled up to a stop light next to a very clean light tan Mark VIII ('97?). We exchange nods and then wait for the green light with nobody around from any direction.
I was hoping for a little adrenaine first thing in the morning, so I drop to 1st. The light turns and, YES!, its a sprint across the four-lane. He gave it up by the time I got across the road with almost a car-length on him, so I let off and eased back into Drive so as not to rub it in.
We met back up at the next red and he says "Hey, that's a beautiful car... and I love the sound of your exhaust, where'd you get it?" I passed along my dealer's name just in time for this light to turn green. Too quick to explain that I've tweaked her a bit or to suggest that he could very easily do little tweaking himself. We parted paths before the next opportunity to talk.
I'm keeping an eye out for that guy... we need to talk some DR. Next to the Marauder, I really have a soft spot for those Mark VIII's.

I wish my lawn looked that good as well. I'm pretty much crying this year as the moles have pretty much just destroyed it. The Cicada's are coming out sometime this weekend too :(
