View Full Version : who has tuned their stock Crown Vic? J-mod?

Just aquired a stock, good running 04 CV Sport for driving to work and on trips.
Thinking about buying Marty's tune, of course it will be a good tune - I just wonder - does the Crown Vic really wake up at all?
leaving it otherwise stock. 87 octane.
3.27 gear, convertor, air box - stock!
I really enjoy better shifting mostly. I got a drilled j-mod seperator plate with the car - just install that?
Marauder has the mod money, just wondering if your Xcal tune in a CV made you smile and never look back, or were your bolt on's what made it better?
cash is tight, need some thoughts beside my own :shake:
thanks!
The trans tune will make the car a lot better.
Not much to be done power wise with 87 octane

^^Agreed. A combination of both a GOOD tune and basic bolt on's will make it a fun driver.
A marauder trans file will go right into a CV pcm.

the no power answer I sort of expected.
I was most pleased with the new shift schedule and raised top end limit when my Marauder was n/a.

I wondered about this....

Marty, maybe you can overlay my awesome Marauder shift schedule when you do the CV tune, and it should be similar on the road?

You will definetly want the MZT mod
Marauder airbox (80mm MAF) the 04 airbox works too but requires a repin for a difference harness connector
"Ziptube" ideally from an 04 CVPI or ADTR's tube
Tune
The 80mm MAF and intake tube were worth 11hp factory ratings difference, combined with a tune it really wakes up the car and improves the noise considerably(you will be surprised)
Upping it to premium fuel will help the difference with the tune, but not completely needed.
Trans tune and/or a modest JMOD are helpful for increasing how sporty the car drives. I would put the separator plate on and leave springs as-is, and have shift points adjusted.
If you want to get into spending more money, 3.73's, metco's and addco's made my vic allot more enjoyable.

I've read all this on crownvic.net long ago, trying to NOT get mod happy on this driver. And 87 octane is all I want it to need to keep cost of ownership down.
But shifting right is a good reason to tune.

I have the JLT cold air intake kit and stock MAF removed from my Marauder when the Eaton swap was done. Will these fit the CV?

The 4v has a different throttle body profile than the 2v and JLT tube will not fit, but the Marauder MAF and airbox are perfect, but will require a tune to use because of the larger MAF 70mm vs 80mm which is where most of the power comes from.
try searching junkyards for the intake tube from an 04 CVPI only, the 03- is identical to yours and the 05+ had a change in the PCV and IAT attaching tubes. Otherwise check out ADTR for his tube, a bit spendy but perfect for the setup.

I agree. I figure, price equal to a CV, then add for the buckets and console.
This was NOT a P71, so she's still plenty tight and quiet to drive. A nice note from mufflers to 'feel' cooler than stock CV. Handling mods and fresh brakes we know Panthers react well to.

the trans shifting from a good tuner changes a Marauder to the car it SHOULD have been from the factory. It will shift at higher rpms, firmer/faster without lag between gears, lock up the convertor a bit later, even deceleration feels better because the downshifts come at a more correct speed/rpm.
With a CV , maybe not as extreme an improvement, as they are not quite as 'lazy' as Marauder shifting, but still seems from the replies that similar 'feel good' shifting will be had.

good info, thanks! I'm not going to start the cash dropping on it, unless after a week, I decide it really could use more..if my 'free' stuff fit, that would have been killer.
The improved shifting from a tune is my greatst reward, as I am part disabled and can't shift with my right hand. Automatic needs to be 'sporty'!

But this tech page says they were standard equipped with 3.27 open:

For sure. I like long shift extension, and no OD or convertor lock up until ~60mph on the highway.
It is perfect for me, but most guys may want his 'starting point' trans shifting, rather than what we created just for me.

Since I don't DD the car ( work ride is DD ) I can do a bit more with a tune.

Thanks Steve, for an excellent deal on a nice car.
She shifts soooo much better than Marauder did before tuning, I'm going to have to put some miles on to be certain it's even needed. She upshifts just fine, and part throttle downshifts are about how Marty tuned my Marauder - pretty sporty!
Power? Meh - the 75mph highway is right in it's sweet spot, and most traffic must think I'm LEO, because they pulled right out of my way.
Enough writing, loading up the trunk CD cartidges (extra from Marauder = 12) and going out.
I'll post up if I mod her, as info, but so far, just enjoying the feel over my Honda. And no, this car will NOT take away fun of driving the Marauder. They are different cars.

I can assure you the car is a genuine Sport. I've had 2 of them, an 03 and this 04. A true indicator is in the suspension. Air suspension in the rear along with a rear sway bar that is not as thick as a P71 or HPP is the dead giveaway. Besides all the other standard Sport equipment, it would cost a ton to "make" a Sport out of a P71 or even a stock P74. Glad to hear the ride went well Geoff, I know she went to a good home.

I procrastinated getting the tune done, it's a basic car and cash is tight.
I finally gave in to my hot rod self and emailed Marty for tuning.
I had 2 tunes emailed (I had an unmarried tuner) the next day!
I put tune 1 in today, and the car is frisky, shifts like my Marauder, and just runs better.
I can't believe a ho-hum CV reacts so well to tuning - on 87 octane!
I have a Marauder air box/80mmm MAF and 04 CVPI intake tube to install, and tune 2 ready for that change. Can't wait!
3.27 rear gear is a big plus, but just enjoying the drive so much more, and so quickly - is Marty.

Is the new MZT tune 87 or 93 octane? I had a Blue Oval tune on my silver 03 with the MZT for both high and low octane. After 2 tanks of 93 I switched tunes to the high test and decided I need a Trac-Lok. Car would ignite the right rear tire on full throttle launch with no brake. After I put in the posi would still spin 15-20 feet before it caught. If you don't have the aggressive 93 tune I would save up. It's worth it.

I stuck with 87 only, and tuned one with MM box/MAF and CVPI air inlet, and one without them.
I really only wanted the improved shifting - but the car is so much more fun too!
I can feel it is on the edge of burning out and chirping a nice 2nd gear, but I have my Marauder for that :D
But, I've said 'I won't do it' before......
My thinking is more toward a budget 3000 stall convertor to get the engine into it's power curve, rather than push, push, push on the timing and AF/R on a stock high mile motor.
If it had a stall convertor, I'd blow the tire(single) right off from a stand still, and have nice around town shifting. Then I'd want posi. Then...:shake:
We'll see....:cool4:

After I put in the posi would still spin 15-20 feet before it caught. If you don't have the aggressive 93 tune I would save up. It's worth it.
Steve - since you have an eye on your old car, I've done:
changed center caps to FORD
added my own Scangauge II
fixed the EVAP issue
done the MZT as suggested
replaced the steering wheel FORD emblem
put a lighter in the empty cubby hole
replaced the roof console with a Homelink optioned unit
have 131k, time for it's oil change based on your sticker :)

I still have the stock airbox and maf from my MM. So, I need the inlet hose from a CVPI and I'm good to go?
Funny thing, the K&N drop in filter from it fits the 04 CV airbox perfectly.
I got set back a bit on the car, as I had to assist my Son a bit financially, otherwise I'd have the tuner and tunes already.
At least the suspension is done for now.

yes - Marauder air box with MAF bolted to it, get the 04 CVPI air inlet, (it is a much better/larger design) and it all swaps on in 5 minutes. With the appropriate tune to match the larger MAF, it breathes mucho better!!

Combine that with the Eaton LS unit and the 3:55 gears from the Marauder, it should hold me over for awhile until the engine and trans are finished for the swap.
excellent.

BBK pn 1780 78mm t/b. I put one on my 04 CV Sport. Requires modified intake tube for the larger diameter but worth it especially if Marty is providing a tune to go with it.

what, did you feel was the added driving benefit form this?
the MM airbox/80mm MAF/2004 CVPI straighter air inlet tube helped.
Also - it is listed ONLY for Mustangs on every site I looked---needs no other mods than inlet tube? Is it simply mounted 180* to face the driver side?
All other connections = plug n play?
thanks

Enough increase in power/throttle response to break the rear wheel loose w/traction control on and to smoke it w/the t/c off! That's not power braking it just slapping the pedal to the floor.
A lot more acceleration from a roll as well and the car is stock in every other way except that I had to make a new intake similar to a JLT because the 78mm T/B could not be made to fit the OEM intake tube.
A tune with this T/B would be better.
You do have to re-fit the PCV line to the back of the T/B and slot/elongate one of the holes in the throttle cable bracket. I believe I had to turn the hard vacuum line on the back of the T/B to the passenger side for the PCV. It's been on the car for the last 6 years with no problems.

OK, LAST update!
put a tank of 93 in and got an appropriate tune from Marty - whoa!
I see what you mean, it's EVEN better.
Con's = burning rubber everywhere, beating on the car, $10 more per/tank, 3 less mpg. - but I can always drop back to 87 octane and stay old :) Sure.....

Told ya you'd like a 93 tune. Makes it a whole different animal. Wait till the road gets cold and really spin up those Coopers. Better yet, put the Blizzaks on, they're already shot.

LOL!
I put the 87 octane tune back in because I was out of control everywhere ;)
It did get below *40 and with the cheap gas, cold air and pavement = feels like the 93 tune! hit 2nd gear and kicks out to the left with traction control on :) :)
I did not use the Blizzaks. I found a new set of Firestone snows, on craigslist 2 blocks from my house
Similar pattern. I get serious snow here, couldn't risk the low tread on those old tires.
It has 2 new cat convertors now - they started rattling. And up to 140,000 - can't stop driving it.
Best daily driver I've owned in 25 years.
