Thinking about buying this '04 next week, but concerned about this leak at the diff... Any thoughts, opinions, ideas, or helpful advice?? Just want to make the right decision before pulling the trigger on this deal.

I'd check the fluid and not worry about the leak.

Yeah I'm definitely going to do that, I don't think I'm going to let it deter me from buying it, but I just needed that 2nd, 3rd, or 4th opinion as a bit of a self security measure from my own obsessive mind. Lol Thanks man.

I would offer to pay for a fluid change and a gasket replacement at a garage. If the mechanic pulls it apart and says you need to dump a bunch of money into the rearend I would negotiate and walk away having blown a hundred bucks.

Just my .02

A rear end on these cars is not all that costly if it needs repair. That leak wouldn't even slow me down in the buying process.

Pull the fill plug and see what is on the magnet......black graphite is OK...shiny metal ain't!!:shake:

Looks like the differential cover might be leaking a little......pretty common especially when yeahoos jack 'em up by the "punkin"!!:argue:

Looking at the rear I wonder what the inside of the tranny looks If you get the car back on a lift again drop the transmission pan too.

If there is a yellow plug in the pan its more than likely the tranny fluid
was never changed from day one. Check to see metal material collecting on the magnet in pan.

Something to consider

179k on mine and not a leak to be found!

Check to make sure the vent for the diff is clear. That could cause leaks. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it. Hell, I'd call that "staining", not even a true leak.
