97 k on the clock no mods. The car only makes the knock once the engine gets up to operating temperature and in gear. Any ideas on what the sound is doesn't make it past 1200 rpm. Only idling while in gear at operating temperature.

it looks like the oil psi is low!

Do you have a real oil pressure gauge ? The factory one does not measure actual pressure. It only reads at 58 lbs. and does not fluctuate like oil pressure actual does

Yeah forgot to mention that I installed the variable sender in place of the stock switch but did not replace the gauge.

Sounds just like mine does, and mine hasn't changed in 10k miles. I haven't looked into it that closely yet though.

Yeah I think it may be a main bearing is worn. I just wanted to know how long would the motor last me I'm in the market for another 4.6 32v that I want to rebuild completely. Do you guys think a high mileage oil would help with the sound the last oil changed I did was with Castrol 5w 20 full synthetic.

So you still don't have a real oil pressure gauge.

Well gonna put a mechanical gague on it later today. Check oil pressure and go from there.

Don't need a mechanical gauge, just get the Autometer (2 1/16)
Oil Pressure Gauge – 4327 (sending unit included).

BTW.... I'd never run a mechanical gauge with oil (or fuel) coming into the passenger compartment.

Oh alright I had one of my buddy's at work listen to the car he think it's a rod bearing as well plan on rebuilding the motor soon anyway. So should I just put in thicker oil maybe 5w 30 and ride it till I get my winter car.

If you have a rod or main knocking thicker oil won't help it. I would suggest parking it until you can fix it.

If you continue to drive it you risk going from having a rebuildable core engine to junk with a hole in it.

I understand right now this is my only mode of transportation looking for something for this winter. So for now I'll stick to just going back and forth to work which is about 10 miles away. Until I'm ready to start a full rebuild.

Use this. My dad used it in all of his cars!

We understand your situation, but your motor doesn't care. Good luck, hope it works out.

It's just that I had two people tell me it shouldn't cause any extra damage in the short time I need to. But again thanks appreciate the help.

Oil pressure seems as if it on the low side was about at 15 psi at idle hot.

My OP with a real gauge and sending unit is over 100PSI cold and less than 20PSI hot / idle. Your probably OK. I'd not drive it, could cause more damage. Are your friends going to help you when you window the block? Car pool, bus, Uber, taxi.

Yeah I'm gonna have help. I'm looking for another car to buy but in the mean time I'm just taking it easy on her driving only where I need to go and that's maybe 50 miles or less a week. But I planned on doing a full rebuild anyway. Just don't want the motor to give on me.
