This will probably sound like a dumb question, but has anyone ever dremeled out the bars from a grill, cleaned it up, and put just the surround back on?

After missing out on a mesh grill last week, I decided to hack my spare Grand Monkey grill to copy it. But then the open idea popped into my head. Low flying birds & rocks are the only problems I can think of.

I did it on my 04 MGM after an "incident". Cut em out, dremeled it smooth...painted the inside area all black; tried to go for a Cobra look. It looked terrible. Lol. If I can find a pic I'll post it.

I have a "Big Mouth" grill with no slats. Use it during August. At idle ~8* drop in coolant temp and at speed the temps quickly drop.

Downside is your A/C is exposed to rocks.

Thanks everyone. Since I have the dumb thing already sawed out, I might as well just see what it's like painted body color & popped in.

This is what I had in mind:

Completely different situation since it has a turbo stuck back there, but I thought it looked pretty sweet.

Looks incomplete..better off cutting up a old cube version (egg crate) of an overhead flourescent light fixture and make an insert...don't laugh seen one used on a 1970's area F series truck and it looked factory with emblem and all.

jUST ASKIN' ....Would there be a market to "Re-enforce" the stock bars in our grills?

Been kicking around an Idea using 3/32" SS wire that could glue/epoxy into backside of ribs to re-enforce cheezy original design.

Was going to go badgeless (as soon as I can find a donor grill) and was going to do this with a "band" around ends to maintain spacing.

Too bad these cars can't be made to look sinister with a grille delete like the new stangs.

Yeah, the 13gt500 looked not right at first, but since it has soooo many coolers it needed it

Get the white 15 yet?

I used coat hangar rod epoxied in behind the badge less bars four years ago. Perfect fit.

Luckily I did because I've had a loose tooth all this summer and the rod is preventing it from going anywhere.

I wouldn't do that simply because it would leave your radiator fully unprotected. Even behind the stock grille my radiator has taken some big hits to a point that I'm considering to put some fine mesh behind the grille. Granted, my cruise control is always set to 100 mph on the Autobahn so that certainly doesn't help but still even at lower speeds it'll take some hits.

You could do something like this...http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/24/717462eff197a87b2bf15e6c8fd7f0 42.jpg The mesh is available on eBay for $75 and it'll give you enough to do the lower air dam...

black surround looks better than chrome, but no actual grille??..looks like a$$ imo like you wrecked it and are too cheap to fix.

The grille tabs kind of kill it.

Bad_S55

Diffinately not the best thing I've ever done. The tabs do throw it off. I do think the color came out well though; it's just black plastidip with the glossifier. I think I might do that with my regular grill.

There are other ways to modify the look of the car that would have better impact than this imo.

Agreed. But like I said, this was just a spare grill I felt like sawing apart. It stayed on for a few minutes before I decided it made better wall art!

Every time I see that s header, I think of BBQ or grilling.

May be one of the reasons I am round....
