View Full Version : Rare Fox body Mustang

It's time to sell my 1984 Mustang GT Turbo Convertible.
I bought it back in 1994 from the original owner.
He had kept it outside and the original Ford Silver (non clear coated) paint had already faded to primer grey.
I know now that I will never have the time, money and patience to restore it.
The car is VERY rare....one of the rarest Fox body Mustangs ever made.
2.3L Turbo I4 (non-intercooled, it is NOT an SVO)
5 speed manual
A/C
But....How does one figure a realistic value for the car?
Is there anyone/forum/site that could help me with pricing the car fairly?
As stated, it will need a new paint job.
The rear window leaks so the convertible top will need to be replaced.
Engine runs fine, and I have the original rims as well.
I pulled most of the interior out, as well as the faded carpet; it's all stored in my basement.

Clean it up a bunch, install the interior parts and try to sell the car as a running driving car
I'd start at 3800.00 and keep the car clean, when you have someone come look at the car, pull it out of the garage and pass it off like you've been caring for your baby since you bought it

I've had 150 fox bodies.. Rarity wise for the 84 2.3Ts is the GT350 due to the lawsuit from Carroll Shelby over Ford's use of the name. If it was one of those in comparable condition, 3-4k IMHO. This is a fairly rare one also no doubt. Running and together I'd put it 2k-3k, possibly more if you can find someone looking for one. www.foureyedpride.com (http://www.foureyedpride.com) is a good resource to investigate as well.
I have a super rare one I've just started to market myself, an 86 t-top coupe.. You don't see many of these at all.

I had an 88 T-top GT. Wish I still had it.

As I am just finishing up the restoration of my 90 7-Up Vert (pictures on facebook), I can tell you that I've got 4K+ just in the interior alone. New carpet, seat foam, leather seat covers, console, trim, door panels and top. I have to believe yours is more rare than mine at this point, so finish installing everything and ask 7500+.
But if you do only want $1500, give me a call and I'll swing by and pick it up as-is. :D

Yep....That's the problem.
I'm looking at a BUNCH of coin for the paint job....then the convertible top....then the interior*.
I'd rather put that money into a 2016 Mustang GT...or a Coyote swap....:D

Production number probably won't mean squat to most potential buyers.
You could easily price that car out of 99% of buyers if you set the price to rarity
I don't suggest you paint the car or fix the top, you will never recoup that money , just clean up what you have, fix all the bulbs, put a new battery in it and sell it as a running driving car.
Most project car buyers want either a body project, or mechanical project. Selling it as a running driving car that everything works will greatly improve your sellers bargaining chips
Good luck with the sale :)

Keep it, and fix it up in retirement. It will keep you out of MA's hair.;)

Agreed
and
Pricing it to rarity will probably mean a no sale. Rare doesn't mean valuable. There has to be a market. Like I say, the 406/427 Mercs are super rare because nobody wanted them when they were new ..... and that hasn't changed much. I'm thinking this turbo 4 GT fits into the same category (though I must say I LOVE the car and would deal with you if I had the space, time, and money).
Put a price on it that will satisfy YOU. If if it doesn't sell, hang on to it for something to do in your old age. Who knows, there may be a demand for it now, and if not now, maybe later on.

Agreed as well on the rare does not = value for oddball, non traditional powered/optioned cars, like this.
This type of rare means the buyer with cash will be rare too.
good luck how ever it plays out Joe.
I'd want the cash for a Coyote car instead, myself :D

I did some more research and found this guide:
http://www.nadaguides.com/classic-cars/1984/ford/mustang-gt/turbo-2-door-convertible/Values
Looks like low retail is @ $4,350
I'm advertising it for $4,000 OBO.
Getting this car prepped and painted is the killer for me.
I'm not investing thousands of dollars into a $4k car.
If anyone paints cars, or has access to a good inexpensive painter (is that even possible?) this is a great car and a very good deal for you.
I'm going to post it on FourEyedPride as well.

Have it painted by the HS vo-tech kids. Some of them are really talented and it may just cost you the paint. Might be worth checking into.

In the $ 4000 range sounds about right. A friend in my Mustang Club just sold his White 1985 SVO Hatch for $ 9500. It was an MCA Gold Award winner. The car was perfect. At the Ohio show this year, it won another award for perfection... his 10th at an MCA national show.
Your GT needs detailing and some work, so $ 4000+ is a fair market price.

After waffling on my '84 Mustang GT Turbo Vert...I think that I am going to keep it and 'Resto-mod' it with a new 2.3L EcoBoost engine.
Not sure if I will go with a 6 speed manual or a 10 speed automatic.
I'm leaning towards the 10 speed....it'll keep the Turbo 4 on 'full boil' better than a 6 speed manual.
This means that I will be selling the Turbo 4 cylinder engine parts that I had bought back in the early 2000s.....
just before I fell in love with, bought, and started modding, a 2003 Mercury Marauder....:D
I am going to sell the following:
2.3L '88 Turbo T-Bird block
Ported Aluminum Esslinger 'D' port Cylinder head
Garrett GT30 ball bearing turbo
Custom stainless steel Exhaust header
NIB 2.5L Ranger crank
Wiseco, skirt & crown Calico coated, forged pistons
Crower 5.7" forged rods
Calico coated bearings
Esslinger billet aluminum water pump
Gutted, ported, port matched and rotated 90 degree Turbo T-Bird intake manifold.
Will need to pick a roller cam and followers, plus injectors and an Intercooler set-up.
(I have an OEM Turbo T-bird intercooler)
Plus more parts that I can't even remember.....
Anyone into the old 'Pinto' motor 2.3L FORD engines...?
This set-up will make and easy 400+ HP.

Still get a chuckle from the scene in Top Secret the movie with the Pinto.

Your doing it wrong...:P... Ls would be less then a 3rd of the price.....faster on motor with a camshaft and valve springs.....parts are inexpensive ..........way lighter and smaller.......way easier to work on....:P

That's why I'm selling all the 2.3L 'Pinto' stuff.....too much work.
A junkyard 2.3L Ecoboost, not a junkyard LS, is the answer!
When my brother and I were building our ERA Cobra, an LS motor would have been the cheapest solution.......
but who would want to drive a '427 Cobra' with a Chevy smallblock in it? :puke:
We did it really right with an all aluminum Shelby block & heads, solid lifter 427 FE FORD big block.
(With a stroker crank to make the FE 468 cubes...heh heh heh...:D)
Makes the 2,400 lb Cobra move at warp speed!
Cheapest way to go....? Heck NO!
The least expensive way to mod a car is seldom a major factor for my projects.
'85 Mustang GT will get a Gen 3 Coyote swap.
You guys know how to get me riled up by suggesting Chevy LS motors...lol

Yep ...I finally realized that Fox Mustangs don't bring diddly squat if you sell them.
For the measly $3,500 +/- I'd get selling it...it'll stay in my garage.

Hey Joe, I feel ya! I just had a guy at work who's been "trying" to buy (or should I say "steal") my 1986 GT vert. Right now it's a solid 7 to 8 foot car sporting its original paint (rock chips etc) and original leather interior (driver quality but has a couple cracks in drivers seat and dash). Everything else is new (powertrain, suspension, gas tank, brakes, trans, clutch, rear, exhaust, top etc). He was pissed that I wouldn't take $4k. You know what? Registered and insured as an antique now, it's cheaper to drop the top and enjoy it rather than give this thing away after all the work over the last 18 years I have owned it.
sspmustang
12-22-2018, 05:37 PM
That is a rare car. I've owned a number of fox bodies (currently have an '86 SSP coupe) and I think you'll find the values have been rising on these, especially on some of the rarer versions such as yours.
I would avoid the temptation to resto-mod it, and just hang onto it as-as-is if you can.
