Some of you should be using Pauls Hi-peformance air box by now. What do you think of it? Notice any difference? Any of you Dyno with it yet?

Yup,.. there is a difference, you can feel it. Is it 18 HP/14 TQ? I'm not sure.
One thing I've noticed: My RPMs at 70 mph have lowered just a bit. Anyone know why?
IF I were you. I'd wait to see what the K&N FIPK can do. If it's better I'll have a slightly used PHP kit for sale! :P

I've been following the K&N saga too, I thought I read they were claiming 8-10 HP and I've have not seen a Dyno posted for it. I doubt they are designing anything other than a new air box as well (no tubing for fresh air)...someone correct me if I'm wrong. So far Paul's seems to be the bang for the buck.

I'd say it's a pretty good bang for the buck. If the K&N only produces 8-10 HP then yes, I'd go for the PHP set-up. (prob'ly cheaper)
I was disappointed there was no fresh air tube. I was under the assumption it came with one. I don't know why I thought that. Well,.. we all know what happens when you make an assumption: you make an ass out of you and umption!

Anyone else out there using Pauls air box?

Yes, I think have the first one ever installed on this board. I didn't feel much performance advantage over the 10" conical K&N and heat shield I had already installed. I had less than $50 in that combo. It was ugly and the PHP box is pretty- maybe that's the advantage... Worth the money? I don't think so.

someone needs to do a before a after Dyno to verify the HP and TQ claims.
I would love to see the same car doing three dynos:
1. Before cold air kit
2. With Paul's kit
3. With K&N kit, whenever it comes out.
That's not very likely to happen, though. If someone wants to send me one of each kit, I will volunteer my car as a tester. Of course, I'd like to keep the one that works best!

Wouldn't mean much to ya, Ross. You already have the conical filter... I think Tom noticed a difference from stock box to Paul's airbox. He's an honest man and I'd take his word to the bank. That being said, I switched to conical too long ago to remember how the stock box performed. I think you might be in the same boat because the "conical" listing in your sig. is what made me hunt for one :) . I would contend that you don't remember the stock box either...

There's always a catch!
Yeah, Dan, I was wondering how much of the gains from either Paul's kit or the K&N kit comes from the change to a larger filter, and how much comes from the cold air shield. If a lot comes from the filter itself, then I probably already have most of what I would get from either one of these mods.

I've got an ugly shield- suitable for driving and track but NOT for the show ring. Logan posted a pic in the gallery. Want it?
Thanks, Dan. I think I have been inspired to try to make my own. Now I just have to decide: plexiglas, sheet aluminum, stainless steel, plywood?

I ordered one a few day back. There was a mix-up at Pauls in processing my order, on the way now. Obviously I have nothing better to do with my $. I have a dyno print out now. I'll try to get a pull done after the installation and compare the two.

Good deal man....
Mine hasn't arrived yet, but when it did I was gonna go straight to Dynotec and get the numbers. Hopefully you will beat me to it, and save me the $50.
Oh hell...I'll probably go dyno anyway!:P

Todd.......what are you up to? If your having a custom air box designed there are a lot of people here interested in the intake portion. Spill it!

For those of your viewing this thread, I just sent Pauls an email asking why the air intake (fresh air) was not incorporated into the newly designed air box. I also asked if they would construct that portion as well for the box. Let you all know if I get a response.

 good luck! They never returned any of my e-mails.

I would think they would reply. There is an obvious need for the fresh air intake to the box. If they incorporated one their product would be improved and have a better chance of flying off the shelf.

I just installed the kit today and was concerned with the quality. 3 out of 4 screws had to be forced into the prepositioned nuts on the casing (stripping) as they were not lined up correctly. The kit is simply a larger filter with a stainless heat shield. It makes the car louder when stamping on the gas. I am getting a superchip custom tune on Mon and intend to see if there is a HP and TQ gain from my last dyno on the base run. The front end behind the headlight assembly is wide open, the rubber tube there is no longer needed. No directions were included as stated on the web site. Would I recommend this kit to a friend? I was looking for something a little better but I may change my mind as I drive the car more.

Not good!!!- I didn't have that issue and thought the quality was good. Are you talking about the flat-screwdriver driven screws on the box itself or having to force the actually mounting of the black metal plate to the stock box mounting studs?

I'm talking about the 3 stainless screws on the top of the heat shield. The tacked on nuts on the frame were misalligned with the holes to let the screws through. Only one screw went in without being forced. It was almost impossible to screw in the other one on the lower left side. I also had a leftover black screw? I might have put this thing together in a different order than you as it did not come with any directions. Also, the rubber end of the filter that fits up against the circular ring hits the back of the top 2 bolts holding on the MAF. I had to face the top 2 bolts a different way from the bottom for room (the small allen wrench end) and put the top right one on last after I had already clamped down the ring that holds on the filter to the protruding circle.

I did that reversal too. I also had to do that with the conical filter mount I had previously installed on the car. I didn't have the nut alignment issue you describe but I'm glad you got it to work. That being said, you shouldn't have had to do it IMO- it sucks to be the "field development team" :nono:

You'd better check the MAFS gasket for leaks.....Mine would not seal (I could see daylight around it) and I had to make a foam gasket to ensure sealing!!! :(
I sent Carl at Paul's one so they could include them in future orders and possibly send one to all of us that are "guinea pigs"!!??
Down here in the SC Lowcountry there is so much sand the engine wouldn't last long with that gasket leaking!!! :nono:

I had no troubles with any of the screws. The filter fit was tough though, and didn't but up against the sleeve too well with the nuts protruding.
I also used the stock foam gasket as the paper one was worthless.

Well, it sounds like the quality and install wasn't the best, but any noticeable performance increase or dyno results similar to the 18 hp they're claiming?

If this is a COLD AIR kit, why the STAINLESS STEEL SHIELD ??
Steel will conduct heat from the engine compartment and transfer it to the intake air.
A heavy PLASTIC shield would have been much better, and it DOESN'T conduct any heat at all.
