    2002 Ford Taurus

Hey guys... I sold my used company vehicle to my Father a few years back and it's a 02 Taurus. A couple of weeks ago it started making a slight squeeling noise similar to an alternator bearing going bad. My Dad had it looked at a local dealership and they said that it is the CAM SENSOR & SYNCRONIZER UNIT. Does anyone know if this is something I can replace in the driveway or if it is something much more difficult that may require experience and proper settings etc. He was quoted $650 for the job and I am trying to determine if I can save him a few bucks. I don't want to F it up more though.

    Any experience / advise???

Yes, he had another local garage look at it this morning and they immediately stated that it was the Cam Sensor and Syncro Unit. I unfortunately have no clue what that is or what a replacement would entail...

I know this, Ford only pays the techs 1.0 to replace both pieces plus NVH diag.
    (#6178 in black per FPIC)
Call 1-800-FORD-788 and press "1". Have the last 6 of your VIN handy. You will get the numbers for FREE. You'll pay $$$ for the certificate.

MM traded in 8/9/13 @ 128909 miles. It was fun for almost 8 years. I met airmercpun on 1/17/14. He was the new owner of my former ride. -Now gone.

Update: back in the game with a late build 03 GMGS with some MM add ons like Escape audiophile radio w/Sirius sat radio, rear sway bar, catback exhaust, and header panel.

    Rest In Peace:

    Paula Babineau 1/9/67-8/2/11

See my garage file for part numbers and whatnot.

IMHO, this site- the members that I chat with- and the ones that I now Hang with- are like my 2nd family. There is such an ongoing welcome feeling here that even members who don't or no longer own the MM can feel.

I guess the next step is to ask anyone if they can come up with the part #s and prices since I am in the office right now... I can try to find a Chiltons tonight to help guide me through the process if the group consensus is that my dumb-ass can do it myself.

High-C, the squealing noise is a classic symptom of the cam synchroniser and yes, you can do it yourself. $650 is outrageous...

It's simple to do, but you need to be aware of a couple of things...gimme until I get home around 1700 and I'll give you some links...if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Here is a link to a discussion about what you are talking about with tips on what they did to replace and part numbers. Hope this helps some. Used to have a Taurus.

Thanks guys... Keep the info coming. I'm still trying to decide if it is a job that won't be too involved for the driveway in the cold. Thanks again for the help. - Chris
