I performed some much needed TLC on my Silver Birch.

Replaced spark plugs, ignition coils and fuel filter.

    Runs fantastic!

Cut the back end off my latest $300 bobber project. I’ve always been a sports bike and dirt bike guy but I’ve been having the itch to create some personal rolling art on the cheap. So enter the Hardley Adavidson ‘81 Kawasaki KZ440 LTD. It’s been sitting in a shed for a decade and I brought her back to life for another run.

Extending the swing arm 4” for now and lowering it a great deal as I’m using the original shock mounts that will be 4” back on the bottom. Hard tail kit and peanut tank to follow at a later date as the wife is about to pop a blood vessel.

All set to clamp up in the jig in the morning to burn it. Followed by some chassis/roll bar satin black rattle can.

Already bent up the 1/2” gas pipe drag handle bar to 20 degree angles.

Parts already here or due in soon:
    New tires
    Vertical plate holder/tail light mount
    LED headlight
    LED mini bullet turn signals
    Mini chopper mirrors
    Springer seat
    Rear rounded chopper fender
Black header wrap (still haven’t decided exhaust routing yet)
Satin Matte chrome orange metallic vinyl wrap for tank and rear fender
    Battery
    Throttle cable
    Carb kits
    Plugs
    120 link chain
    Wiring connector kit for bikes

All that for $350! Man I forgot how cheap bikes are compared to cars.

I think thats it??? For now.

When I broke my neck and got paralyzed in 1982, I lost my 2 favorite things:
    ability to shift manual trans
    ability to ride bikes
as a trials / moto x / street bike enthusiast, I have dreams sometimes
way to go Bob! way more donuts for dollars!
I could ride all day for under $10 bucks, and if anything broke, fix it with carpenters tools

    Busy busy weekend!

Round one finished up last night at 7 and went for a spin. First the throttle rev’ed way high when I turned the steering to the right during my preflight. Loosened up the cable, all good.

Next I made it one block and lost all battery power. I found a bad factory female connection that had loosened over the years, a quick crimp and the bullet connector fit snug.

Third find, it was starving for fuel and shut down again a mile away. Switched it over to reserve and she she was back to life. I guess a gallon is about the limit for the hump in the tank?

She rode way smoother than I ever thought it would considering the stock shocks are within 1/2” to 3/4” from bottoming out when I’m sitting on it and the springer seat sees my petite ass as a toddlers and simply laughs at the idea of actually working.. Also I mounted the tires myself and left the wheel weights as they were. I figured I’d have them balanced out if later if need be. Well at 50mph (probably the highest I’ll even ride it LOL) not a single shimmy, just smooth as silk.

Swing arm back from paint (oh wait, that’s me )

Rear braking adjustment rod also lengthened 4” and new longer drum holder bar.

Drag bar ends filled and in primer.

    Before.

    Now.

I still have three turn signals to finish mounting. Address a blinking brake light on the dash and lack of a difference between tail light and brake light.

The reason for stopping at this stage is my 17 year old son got his motorcycle permit on Saturday and needs some seat time on his cute Ninja 250 before safety class starts in three weeks. His only real experience is trail riding including hill climbing up heavily wooded trails on his RM250 he sold and his mini bike on the street (that topped out near 50 with our engine swap and also 180’d and actually thru me the **** off!)

So with today’s distracted texting drivers I wanted something to show him what signs to look for and how to be as safe as one can be. At least he came from experience in off roading like I did when I finally got my license 20 years ago. I can honestly say I never had an issue with another motorist that I couldn’t brush off as just a small obstacle. My 2-3 near misses were always me being stupid going to fast, wheelies down the highway, and once loose gravel while knee dragging. All stupid but recovered fortunately but lesson learned. Now my riding is simply cruising as I’m too expensive to get hurt or killed..

Stay tuned for version 2! Hard tail with a better seat.. Something different with the exhaust, and I’m sure a host of other stuff.
