Just Got Back From The Track

Went to Raceway Park tonight in Englishtown New Jersey(3 miles from my house).
Weather was about 50 degrees, sea level elevation. No cooling down of engine.
    I made 3 runs.
    Run#1 14.71 94mph
    Run#2 14.80 94mph
    Run#3 14.60 95mph
I learned a few things as far as launching the car goes.

First run I power braked at 2200 rpm with tires hot
Second run I power braked at almost 2500 rpm tires hot and as you see I had a slower E.T. and my 60 foot suffered.
On the 3rd and final run I did the opposite of what I would normally do. I left at 2000rpm without heating the tires up. When I launched the engine was able to flash up a few hundred rpms until it hit the stall point of the converter which in turn broke the tires loose just enough to hear a quick tire screech. This method yielded the lowest E.T.

I now see how changing the Tourque Converter could make a dramatic difference in this car. I may order one this week.

Mods so far ...D.R. chip-4:10 gears and Irridium plugs will be in later this week.
I plan on ordering the Edlebrock Nitrous system soon.

Interesting. Chips and gears are worth .2 sec.

I'm thinking of forgoing gears and just going with chip/plugs for
    the moment.

Johnny: Before you reach your conclusions on the gears, drive a car that has had the gears done. It's a big difference using Sarge's "Butt-o-meter." Trust me on this one. The fun factor is worth it.

Weather permitting, I'll be headed off to Huntsville Dragway this weekend. I'll get everyone some 1/8 mile numbers on a bone stocker, perhaps with and without A/C if you'd like.

Doesn't the A/C automatically disengage on WOT?

I dunno, find out soon for sure. Probably does, but it's been so cold lately I haven't run it. (the A/C)

Try lauching at different rpms and watch you 60ft times. I am going back to the track Friday and I want to experiment more with leaving at a lower rpm as I had better 60ft times.

Believe it or not, Mike, after adding the Stallion TC with a 3500 stall, I was having launch problems too. My MM drove real nice out of the gate, and promptly dropped into 3rd gear, where she stayed for a second, before shifting back to 2nd to continue on. To describe this better, it is as if I was cruising on the highway and wanted to pass someone WOT. This gear confusion could easilly cost me a full second in the 1/4 mile.

I spoke to Dennis about my launch habits, and he suggested the same launch options you have describe here. I tried a few and was still disappointed. In my second call, he said...his words now, not mine..."OD off, wind her to 1000 RPM, let her go and spank her hard." I suppose you can guess what he meant, and I tried it myself.

Dennis is right, the shifting problem went away, and my hole shot was more like my old days with a manual tranny. Fast wind up to 3500, and gone, just like dropping the clutch way back when. But, I have to do something about this new wheel spin, I have got to get her to hook up better.

Try this for me? At least once? Let me know how you do?

BTW, these are very decent numbers for your first time out, I like them. Tweaking your MM is only half of it, tweaking our driving skill is the other.

Do you mean power brake it to 1000rpm in drive, or do you mean do a neutral at 1000rpm and slip it into drive? Also why would the OD being off make a difference?
I like to experiment, I also have a 87 T-Type Turbo Regal that demands alot of "technique " and it runs a 12.80 (chip+sticky radials)., and my pro street Camaro but that is a totally different animal.
Weather permitting I will race again either Friday-Sunday-or next Wed.
Living next to the track is great!!!

Yes, the AC does disengauge at WOT. However, I've noticed a bit more of a hesitation when slamming it as compared to just having everything off during a race.

I am waiting for this answer too Mac.

I have become accustomed to OD off, and just throwin' the wood to it. Exactly OPPOSITE of the wifes LS=5th gear brake torque at 2500. She NEEDS the flash though...

    A neutral drop?!?!

I believe he's talking brake torquing. Plus too, isn't there something on cars these days to prevent harsh neutral drops?

When I ran against my buddy's El Camino, I held her at about 1200 and let loose. Seeing Mike's post, maybe I'll give her a little more next time. Still beat him by a bumpers length though.

No neutral drop...No, No, No...Brake torque to 1000 RPM and mash the gas....And hold on.

I suppose you could adjust the 1000RPM to personal tastes.

Good...I'm glad you clarified...I didn't want to leave my driveshaft on the starting line. :-)
